A profile of Suryakumar Yadav, the Mumbai batter known for 360-degree stroke-play: his long road to India selection, T20 success and the 2024 final catch.
Suryakumar Yadav is a right-handed middle-order batter from Mumbai who has become known around the world for his inventive, all-round stroke-play. Often called SKY, he made his international debut relatively late, yet quickly established himself as one of the leading Twenty20 batters.
Born in Mumbai in 1990, Suryakumar spent years in domestic cricket, playing for Mumbai and building a reputation for consistent run-scoring. In the Indian Premier League he first played for Mumbai Indians, then joined Kolkata Knight Riders in the middle of the 2010s before returning to Mumbai Indians in 2018. His good form there, combined with strong domestic numbers, eventually earned him a national call-up.
Suryakumar is famous for scoring all around the ground, including behind square on both sides of the wicket. He uses the scoop, the ramp and the sweep to play shots over the wicketkeeper’s head, and he is quick to adapt to the pace and line of bowlers. He thrives in the middle overs and at the death, where his ability to find gaps can quickly shift momentum.
He made his T20 international debut against England in Ahmedabad in March 2021, and played his first one-day international against the same opposition in Pune that month. He earned a Test cap in February 2023 against Australia in Nagpur.
The Twenty20 format has been his most productive. He was named ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year for 2022, and again for 2023. At the 2024 T20 World Cup, which India won, he took a memorable boundary-line catch to dismiss David Miller in the final against South Africa.
Suryakumar’s story is one of persistence: a player who spent many years proving himself domestically before succeeding at the top level. His inventive batting has influenced how many young players approach T20 cricket, and he remains one of its most watched performers. All career details are as of the end of 2024; later developments are not covered.
