NewsTamim Iqbal Optimistic India’s Tour of Bangladesh Will Take Place
BCB president Tamim Iqbal says talks with the BCCI are fruitful and he expects India’s postponed white-ball tour of Bangladesh to happen, maybe in 2027.
A profile of Tamim Iqbal, the Chittagong-born left-handed opener who became one of the leading run-scorers in the history of Bangladesh cricket.
Tamim Iqbal is a left-handed opening batter who has been central to Bangladesh’s batting for much of the 21st century. Born in 1989 in Chittagong, he is known for his attacking intent at the top of the order and for the weight of runs he scored in one-day international cricket.
Tamim came through age-group and domestic cricket in Bangladesh and made his international debut in 2007, while still a teenager. He made an immediate impression in the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean, where Bangladesh beat India in the group stage, and was soon regarded as the country’s top batting prospect.
Tamim was an aggressive opener who looked to score off the front foot, with a particular strength in the cover and off-side areas. He was also known for his ability to pull and cut anything short. Over time he combined that aggression with greater control, and became an anchor as well as a striker. In one-day cricket he was consistently among the leading run-scorers for Bangladesh.
A highlight came in 2010, when he scored a Test century at Lord’s, an achievement that earned him a place on the famous honours board. He also captained Bangladesh in one-day internationals and played in several World Cups and Champions Trophies. At domestic level he played for Chittagong Division and for teams in the Bangladesh Premier League, including Comilla Victorians and Dhaka Dynamites.
Tamim’s legacy rests on the consistency with which he provided starts at the top of the order for a rising cricket nation. Alongside Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim, he was part of the core group of players who raised Bangladesh’s standing in international cricket, and his record as the country’s leading one-day run-scorer reflects his longevity and reliability.
