A profile of Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladeshi left-arm spinner and left-handed batter who became one of the leading all-rounders in world cricket.
Shakib Al Hasan is a Bangladeshi all-rounder who has been the country’s most prominent cricketer for much of his career. Born in 1987, he combined slow left-arm orthodox spin with left-handed middle-order batting, and became one of the leading all-rounders in the world across all three formats.
Shakib made his international debut for Bangladesh in 2006 and was soon established as a key player in a team that was growing in confidence. He played domestic cricket for Khulna Division and, as his reputation spread, took up opportunities in other leagues, including a spell with Worcestershire in English county cricket.
As a bowler, Shakib relies on accuracy and subtle changes of pace rather than big turn, and he is hard to score off in the middle overs. As a batter, he is a composed left-hander who can build an innings or accelerate, with a strong sense of how to pace a chase. His all-round ability led to him being ranked number one all-rounder in the ICC rankings in all three formats.
He has captained Bangladesh in all formats and played in several World Cups. His 2019 Cricket World Cup was especially notable: he scored 606 runs, including two centuries, and took 11 wickets, one of the best all-round performances in a single World Cup. He has also been a prominent figure in franchise cricket, including Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.
Shakib’s significance lies in how he lifted expectations for Bangladesh. His performances showed that the team could compete with the leading nations, and he helped build the confidence of a generation of Bangladeshi players. He remains among the most successful and decorated all-rounders in the sport’s history, and his career is an important chapter in the story of Bangladesh cricket.
