Tillakaratne Dilshan: Sri Lanka’s Inventive Opener and the Dilscoop

Profile of Tillakaratne Dilshan, the Sri Lankan batter famous for the Dilscoop, his career as an opener across formats and his role in Sri Lanka’s T20 success.

Tillakaratne Dilshan was one of the most inventive batters Sri Lanka has produced. Over a long international career he evolved from a middle-order player who also kept wicket into a fearless opener, and he gave cricket one of its most recognisable shots, the Dilscoop.

Early life and rise

Born in Kalutara in 1976, Dilshan made his international debut for Sri Lanka in 1999. For much of his first decade he was in and out of the side, valued for his fielding, his part-time off-spin and his ability to bat in the middle order. He also kept wicket on occasion, adding to his versatility.

His career changed shape at the end of the 2000s, when Sri Lanka moved him to the top of the order in limited-overs cricket. The promotion unlocked a more aggressive style, and his numbers rose sharply as a result.

Playing style

As an opener, Dilshan was quick on his feet and unusually strong square of the wicket. He used the pace of fast bowlers, picking the length early and manipulating the field. The Dilscoop, in which he stepped across and flicked or scooped the ball over his own shoulder towards fine leg, became his trademark and was widely copied in the T20 era.

He was also an energetic fielder, particularly in the inner ring and at backward point, and his off-spin could break a partnership when the team needed a different option.

Career highlights

Dilshan was a central figure in Sri Lanka’s run of limited-overs finals around the turn of the 2010s. He was the leading run-scorer and Player of the Tournament at the 2009 T20 World Cup, and Sri Lanka reached the final of that event as well as the 2011 ODI World Cup final. He was part of the side that won the 2014 T20 World Cup, a title that Sri Lanka had long been chasing.

Across formats he scored more than 5,000 Test runs and more than 10,000 ODI runs as of the end of 2024, a rare double for a Sri Lankan, and he reached many of those milestones as an opener. He also played franchise cricket in the Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils.

He stepped away from Test cricket in 2013 and finished his international career in 2016, after a farewell series in the shorter formats.

Legacy

Dilshan is remembered as a bridge between Sri Lanka’s classical batting tradition and the more experimental approach of the T20 age. His opening partnerships kept Sri Lanka competitive in global tournaments, and his creativity left a lasting mark on how batters think about scoring behind the wicket.
