Mumbai Indians may have their captain back for the match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur, but another key player could be missing. Reports say Hardik Pandya has recovered and is set to lead the side.
Pandya’s return
Pandya sat out MI’s previous match, against Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium, after sustaining an injury in the game against Chennai Super Kings. Vice-captain Suryakumar Yadav led the team in his place and guided them to a comfortable win that kept their playoff hopes alive.
Pandya was not seen at Mumbai airport when the squad left for Raipur. Reports suggest he will join the group on Thursday, May 7, with the rest of the team.
A new selection problem
His return may coincide with a different headache. Suryakumar is likely to miss the game for personal reasons linked to the expected arrival of his first child.
The double blow could force Mumbai to make several changes to their XI for the important fixture. The franchise has already dealt with a number of injury concerns this season, which have disturbed the balance of the squad at key moments.
Even so, MI have shown resilience, notably in the win over Lucknow, where senior players stepped up. Pandya’s comeback is expected to give the team a timely lift as the tournament reaches a decisive phase.
