Before the start of the Mumbai Indians v Chennai Super Kings game at the Wankhede, television cameras found a supporter who looked remarkably like Lasith Malinga. The fan copied the former Sri Lanka and Mumbai fast bowler’s trademark hairstyle and beard, and even wore a similar Mumbai Indians training shirt.
The moment spread quickly among the crowd inside the stadium, with many fans amused by the unexpected Malinga sighting at such a high-profile fixture.
Malinga’s record with Mumbai
Malinga remains one of the most iconic figures in the franchise’s history. He spent nine IPL seasons with Mumbai, playing 122 matches and taking 170 wickets at an economy rate of 7.14.
He was central to Mumbai’s success, helping them win the title in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019 before he retired from the league.
Still part of the set-up
Malinga is now the bowling coach of the five-time champions. In that role he works closely with the pace attack, which includes leading international bowlers such as Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult.
