Team NewsBumrah May Play a First-Class Game Before India’s New Zealand Tests
Selectors want Jasprit Bumrah to prove his left knee can handle a first-class match, possibly in the Ranji Trophy, before Test duty in New Zealand.
A profile of Jasprit Bumrah, the Ahmedabad-born fast bowler known for his unusual action, accurate yorkers and 15 wickets at the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Jasprit Bumrah was born in Ahmedabad in 1993 and played for Gujarat in domestic cricket. His talent was spotted by Mumbai Indians, for whom he made his Indian Premier League debut in 2013. He then earned a call-up to India’s limited-overs side and made his international debut in January 2016 on a tour of Australia.
Bumrah’s awkward, short-stride action and quick arm are among the most distinctive in world cricket. The delivery is hard for batters to read, and he is known for his accurate yorkers, his control of the new ball and his ability to bowl in the death overs. He later added the skills of a Test-match bowler, using seam movement and bounce.
He made his Test debut in January 2018 in Cape Town, and in the next few years became India’s most reliable pace bowler across all three formats. At the 2024 T20 World Cup he took 15 wickets, was named player of the tournament and helped India win the title.
On the 2024–25 tour of Australia he took 32 wickets in the Border–Gavaskar Trophy and captained India in the opening Test in Perth, which India won. His pace, accuracy and consistency drew praise from his opponents.
Even at this stage of his career, Bumrah is considered among the finest fast bowlers of his generation, and his emergence has helped change the perception that India’s strengths lie only in spin. His achievements remain a work in progress, so this profile covers his record only up to the end of 2024.
