Vaughan Cautions Fleming That England Have No MS Dhoni to Captain Him

Michael Vaughan has told Stephen Fleming to expect a very different job as England’s Test head coach, because he will not have an MS Dhoni to lead his side. The former England captain made the point in his column for The Telegraph.

Different environment

Fleming, recently appointed to succeed Brendon McCullum, comes from a highly successful spell at Chennai Super Kings, where he oversaw five IPL titles. Vaughan called him a respected manager and tactician, but said English cricket lacks a captain of Dhoni’s calibre. In his view, Dhoni’s leadership and tactical sense let Fleming concentrate on managing the squad, and an experienced coaching group also helped CSK dominate.

Vaughan singled out former CSK bowling coach Eric Simons for getting the best out of skilful bowlers rather than relying only on express pace. He suggested Fleming could take the same approach with England’s Test attack, valuing swing, seam movement and bowling intelligence over raw speed.

Root back as captain

England have also confirmed Joe Root’s return as Test captain. Root led the side from 2017 to 2022 and remains England’s most-capped Test captain, with 65 matches in charge and 27 wins.

Timeline

Fleming will take over formally once England’s Test series against Pakistan is finished, with Marcus Trescothick as interim head coach until then. He is expected to start his new role before the Test tour of South Africa later this year, when his methods will be closely watched as England begin a new chapter in red-ball cricket.
