A profile of MS Dhoni, the Ranchi wicketkeeper-batter who captained India to the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni was born in Ranchi in 1981, in what is now the state of Jharkhand, a region that had produced few international cricketers before him. He made his one-day international debut against Bangladesh in December 2004. Within a year he had made a name with a rapid 183 not out against Sri Lanka in Jaipur, an innings that announced him as a powerful striker of the ball.
Dhoni combined unorthodox, strong hitting with a calm temperament. As a finisher in limited-overs cricket he was known for judging a chase to the last over, and behind the stumps his quick hands and sharp reading of the game made him an effective wicketkeeper. His composure under pressure became the defining feature of his captaincy.
He was appointed India’s captain in the shorter formats in 2007 and led the team to victory at the inaugural T20 World Cup that year. In 2011 he captained India to the 50-over World Cup on home soil, finishing the final against Sri Lanka with an unbeaten 91 and a match-winning six. India also won the Champions Trophy in 2013 under his leadership, and he remains the only captain to have won all three major ICC white-ball titles of that period.
Under him India also reached the top of the Test rankings in 2009. He played 90 Tests and scored 4,876 runs before retiring from the format in December 2014, and he went on to make more than 10,000 runs in one-day internationals.
In the IPL he is closely associated with Chennai Super Kings, whom he led to multiple titles, and he also played for Rising Pune Supergiant during the period when Chennai were suspended.
Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket in August 2020, a year after his last match for India. He is remembered as one of the most successful captains in the game’s history and as a wicketkeeper-batter who redefined the finisher’s role. This profile reflects his record up to the end of 2024.
