Suryakumar Yadav has not been written off by India’s selectors. A BCCI source told Deccan Chronicle that the 35-year-old is not part of the current plans but can earn a recall by piling up runs in domestic cricket.
Form dip behind the omission
Suryakumar led India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title at home, beating New Zealand in the final. His form since has been poor, though. In IPL 2026 he made only 270 runs at an average of 20.76 for Mumbai Indians.
India’s T20I side, now captained by Shreyas Iyer, has also had a difficult spell. They lost a series 2-0 to Ireland, the first time they had ever lost a bilateral T20I series to that opponent, and were then beaten 4-0 by England, a result that cost them the top spot in the ICC T20I rankings.
Selectors stick with Shreyas
Despite those results, the selectors have kept faith in Shreyas as captain and kept him for the upcoming T20I tour of Southern Africa. Suryakumar was also left out of the three-match series against Zimbabwe.
Mushtaq Ali Trophy the next test
The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy now looks like his best route back. Playing for Mumbai, he will begin his campaign against Hyderabad on 14 November. A productive domestic season could revive his international T20 career.
