Sri Lanka fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has undergone successful surgery on a hamstring injury and has started his rehabilitation.
The injury and surgery
The 23-year-old was hurt in the recent IPL season, during a match against Gujarat Titans on May 16. He left the field after bowling only eight deliveries. A statement from his management said he has now had a left biceps femoris open surgical hamstring repair and has begun recovery in France.
The process was supported by Sri Lanka Cricket and Kolkata Knight Riders, who backed his treatment and recovery plan. His manager said in a social media post that he will work hard, stay focused and return to doing what he loves soon.
A troubled season
Pathirana was one of the high-profile signings ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, but fitness problems disrupted his campaign. Earlier he had struggled with a calf injury during the T20 World Cup, which delayed his arrival and affected his availability.
The latest setback also ruled him out of Sri Lanka’s recent all-format tour of the West Indies, where the team had mixed results across the formats.
The road back
The right-arm pacer will now concentrate on rehabilitation, with the aim of returning stronger to competitive cricket in the coming months.
