Kavya Maran Sees More Growth Ahead for Sunrisers After The Hundred Debut

Kavya Maran has said she sees plenty of room for the Sunrisers brand to grow after the Sun Group completed its purchase of the former Northern Superchargers in The Hundred. The group, which owns Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and Sunrisers Eastern Cape in South Africa’s SA20, bought 100 per cent of the franchise. Other investors in the competition took majority or minority stakes, which makes Sun Group the only owner of an entire team following the privatisation of the tournament.

Despite owning the team outright, Maran said the relationship with Yorkshire County Cricket Club remains an important part of its future. Speaking to Sky Sports, she said this had been the intention from the start, that the two parties work closely together, and that Yorkshire have been excellent partners.

Ambitions to keep expanding

Asked whether the group would stop here, Maran suggested not, saying nothing seems likely to hold it back. She was encouraged by the amount of orange in the crowd in Leeds, noting that supporters had embraced a new identity after years behind a different brand, and said the aim now is simply to keep growing.

A successful multi-team brand

Sunrisers Hyderabad won the IPL title in 2016 and have since reached two more finals, in 2018 and 2024. Sunrisers Eastern Cape have won three of the first four SA20 editions, making them the league’s most successful team.

With a promising debut season in The Hundred and a widening international reach, the Sun Group appears set on establishing Sunrisers as one of franchise cricket’s leading brands.
