Mohammad Amir Says His Pakistan Career Is Over After Becoming a British Local

Mohammad Amir has shut the door on any further international comeback. The left-arm quick, who retired from international cricket on 14 December 2024, has since gained British citizenship and now plays English domestic cricket as a local.

In an interview with Muhammad Furqan Bhatti, Amir said players who feature as locals in competitions such as the County Championship and The Hundred must sign a document agreeing not to play for another country in that capacity. For that reason, he said, his Pakistan chapter is closed.

How his status changed

Amir obtained British citizenship through his wife, Narjis Khan, with the citizenship confirmed in June 2026. Around the same time he joined Nottinghamshire for the 2026 Vitality Blast.

With his new standing and his contractual obligations, he has made plain that he does not plan to pursue another return to international cricket.

Record in Pakistan colours

Amir had a distinguished career for Pakistan in all three formats. He played 36 Tests and took 119 wickets, claimed 81 wickets in 61 ODIs and took 71 in 62 T20Is.

One of his best tournaments was the 2019 ODI World Cup, where he was Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker with 17 wickets in eight matches. His best figures there were 5 for 30 against Australia.

His international story included two retirements. He first stepped away in December 2020, then reversed that decision and came back before the 2024 T20 World Cup.

After the second retirement in December 2024 and his move into English cricket as a local player, he now appears to have ended his international career for good.
