Heinrich Klaasen says stepping away from international cricket has given him room to breathe. The South African announced his retirement on June 2, 2025, ending a seven-year career that spanned four Tests, 60 ODIs and 58 T20Is. His last game for South Africa was the 2025 Champions Trophy semi-final against New Zealand in Lahore.
Time to reset between tournaments
Since then he has concentrated on domestic and franchise competitions around the world. Klaasen feels the change has helped him manage his workload, because the gaps between tournaments, often a month to two months, allow him to recover physically and mentally, work on his game and prepare for the next event. He spoke about this in an interview with JioStar.
Form in IPL and The Hundred
His numbers in 2026 suggest the approach is working. In the IPL he made 624 runs in 15 innings, including six fifties. In The Hundred he had collected 166 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 182.41, with two half-centuries.
Manchester Super Giants have reached the Men’s Hundred final, where they meet Trent Rockets on August 16, and Klaasen’s focus is on helping them win the trophy.
Trophies the main target
The big-hitting batter said that winning trophies is his main goal, noting it has been a lean spell in that respect. His personal aim is to put himself, and the team, in positions to win them.
He conceded that keeping standards high while playing less cricket is not easy, but he believes his recent performances show he is managing it.
