Heather Knight is retiring from international cricket, with the historic women’s Test at Lord’s set to be her 320th and last match for England. The England and Wales Cricket Board announced it on the second day, shortly after she made 6 off 25 balls in England’s first innings.
A long career
Knight made her international debut in 2010 and played 320 matches for England. She became one of the country’s most accomplished cricketers, widely respected for her consistency, leadership and commitment in every format.
In her own words
In a statement, Knight said she was extremely grateful and privileged to have been on the journey as an England player. She admitted that leaving was emotional but that she felt at peace with the timing.
She said it was hard to walk away because her team-mates and the dressing room had been a constant in her life for 16 years, and that the memories and people had helped shape her. She added that she was content with her decision and excited about what comes next.
End of an era
Her retirement closes a chapter for England Women. Knight established herself as one of the team’s most influential players, and as she takes the field for the final time at Lord’s, the game will celebrate the legacy she leaves in English and international women’s cricket.
