Heather Knight will keep playing for Sydney Thunder in WBBL|12, even after stepping back from international cricket and moving into administration. Knight retired from international cricket in July and is sitting out The Hundred this season.
A dual role
She has also become general manager of the London Spirit women’s team, giving her a view of franchise cricket from the off-field side. Thunder general manager Trent Copeland said she messaged him straight after announcing her international retirement to confirm her commitment to the club.
A key figure at the Thunder
Knight has been among the club’s most influential players. She has won the Alex Blackwell Medal as the Thunder’s best player in three of her four previous seasons. Her experience joins a batting group that features Phoebe Litchfield, Georgia Voll, Tahlia Wilson, Anika Learoyd and Laura Harris.
Knight said she has enjoyed playing for the side over the years, noting it is a fun group that she has captained. She believes what Copeland and coach Lisa Keightley are building is special.
New perspective
She added that seeing how a franchise runs from another angle has increased her appreciation of the work done by league staff, coaches and support teams. As a leader this season she intends to stay level and calm, as she always has.
Her return gives the Thunder an experienced leader and proven performer as they aim for another strong WBBL campaign.
