A profile of the Sydney Thunder, founding Big Bash League club: their 2015-16 title, the record low score of 15, home grounds and women’s team.
The Sydney Thunder are a Twenty20 franchise based in Sydney, playing in the Big Bash League and the Women’s Big Bash League. One of the eight original BBL clubs, they are the second Sydney team in the competition alongside the Sixers, and their lime-green colours make them easy to spot.
The club was established in 2011 when the BBL replaced the earlier state-based Twenty20 competition with city franchises. The Thunder’s early years were a challenge, and they struggled to match the success of some other clubs.
The Thunder’s best moment came in the 2015-16 season, when they won the BBL title by beating the Melbourne Stars in the final. It remains the club’s most celebrated achievement and the high point of a period in which they became a consistently competitive side.
In December 2022, the Thunder were bowled out for 15 against Adelaide Strikers, the lowest total in the history of the competition and one of the lowest in all Twenty20 cricket. The match was a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in the shortest format, and it is often mentioned when the club’s history is discussed.
The Thunder play most home games at Sydney Showground Stadium in Sydney Olympic Park, with fixtures also played at Manuka Oval in Canberra. The club’s regional presence helps to extend their following beyond the city itself.
The WBBL began in 2015-16 and the Thunder have been part of it from the start. The Sydney Smash derby against the Sixers is one of the best-known fixtures in Australian domestic cricket.
