UAE Cricket Team: History, Venues and World Cup Record

Read about the United Arab Emirates cricket team, its ICC Associate status, the major grounds in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, and its World Cup history.

The United Arab Emirates has become one of the most important cricket hubs outside the traditional Test countries. Its significance owes as much to its role as a neutral venue for the world’s leading teams as to the achievements of its own national side.

A cricketing hub

Sharjah began staging international cricket in the 1980s and became a well-known stop for one-day tournaments, including an Asia Cup in 1984. The International Cricket Council moved its headquarters to Dubai in 2005, and the country later became home to the ICC Academy. Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi all have major stadiums that have hosted internationals and franchise competitions.

The national team

The national side is run by the Emirates Cricket Board and is an ICC Associate Member. Because of the country’s large expatriate population, many national players have been born elsewhere, often in South Asia, before representing the UAE through residence rules. This has shaped a squad culture that blends different cricketing backgrounds.

World Cup appearances

The UAE played in the 1996 Cricket World Cup, which was co-hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and returned to the 50-over tournament in 2015 in Australia and New Zealand. In the T20 World Cup the side has qualified several times, including the 2014, 2016, 2021, 2022 and 2024 editions.

Hosting duties

The UAE has repeatedly stepped in as a host for matches that could not be played elsewhere. Pakistan used UAE grounds as a home base for a number of years, and the country staged a large share of the 2021 T20 World Cup, jointly with Oman. It also hosts the International League T20, a franchise tournament.

Challenges and outlook

The main challenge for the national side is building a deeper domestic player pool, as well as increasing the number of fixtures against higher-ranked opponents. Even so, the country’s facilities and administrative infrastructure make it a stable and ambitious Associate programme. This is a general overview and does not cover current squads, rankings or recent results.
