Sydney Thunder have appointed Andrew Flintoff as head coach ahead of the 2026–27 Big Bash League season. He takes over a franchise that finished bottom of the table last season with only two wins.
Coaching background
Flintoff has coached England Lions and has franchise experience too. He spent two seasons with Northern Superchargers, now Sunrisers Leeds, guiding them to fourth and third place.
Flintoff’s outlook
Flintoff said he cannot wait to get started and is optimistic, seeing a lot to build on in the franchise, its players and its support. He is keen to work with a mix of established stars and emerging Australian talent.
He highlighted senior players David Warner, Chris Green and Daniel Sams, and praised young players Sam Konstas, Matthew Gilkes and Tanveer Sangha. In his words, there are experienced players who can flourish in the right environment alongside incredible young talent.
Club reaction
General Manager Trent Copeland welcomed the appointment, calling Flintoff a global icon and a modern leader who can build a strong high-performance culture.
Flintoff also has BBL playing experience, having represented Brisbane Heat in 2014–15 before retiring from professional cricket.
