Leg-spinning all-rounder Georgia Wareham influenced every part of Australia’s win over South Africa at the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, and afterwards joked that she hopes she has not peaked too early.
Contribution with bat, ball and in the field
Batting at No. 5, Wareham hit 32 off 22 balls as Australia posted 172 for 8. She then took 3 for 13 with the ball. In the field she held a sharp catch to remove South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt and ran out the dangerous Marizanne Kapp.
South Africa were dismissed for 107. Australia’s four spinners shared eight wickets between them and controlled the contest.
Wareham’s verdict
Wareham said it was one of her better games for Australia in a long time, and she hoped there would be more of the same to come.
She also spoke about feeling settled in the middle order after years of shifting up and down the batting line-up. She said she is happy to bat anywhere for the team, and that plenty of experience at No. 5 in the Big Bash had helped her.
Wareham credited the spin group as a whole, saying their communication and shared reading of the conditions were central to the dominant bowling performance.
What comes next
Australia’s second group-stage match is against Bangladesh Women on June 17 at Headingley.
