Player SpotlightNathan Lyon races to be fit for Australia’s August Tests against Bangladesh
Nathan Lyon, 38, is recovering from a hamstring tear and says he wants to play every Test he is available for, starting against Bangladesh in August.
Bangladesh arrive for the final ODI of the Australia tour having already secured the series with two convincing wins in Dhaka. Their batting has found its rhythm at the right time: Najmul Hossain Shanto has 109 runs at an average of 54.50, Tanzid Hasan struck a brisk 54 at a strike rate of 117.39, and Towhid Hridoy has added 71 runs, including an unbeaten 40 in a tricky chase.
Mosaddek Hossain has been the pick of the lot. His unbeaten 86 in the first game rescued Bangladesh from 106/4 to 284/8, and he has chipped in with the ball at an economy of 3.58. Mustafizur Rahman leads the wicket-takers with five at 4.13 an over, while Taskin Ahmed and Nahid Rana have four apiece, with Nahid regularly touching 150 kph.
Australia’s tour has been disrupted. Mitchell Marsh is out with an ankle injury and Travis Head is away on personal leave, leaving Josh Inglis to lead an inexperienced group facing a 3-0 defeat. Cameron Green has 77 runs at an average of 77, Marnus Labuschagne made 55 in the second game and Alex Carey has 60, but partnerships have been scarce and Matt Short has fallen first ball twice. Nathan Ellis and Matt Renshaw have three wickets each, Adam Zampa just one, and four dropped catches have not helped.
Dhaka’s Shere Bangla surface is traditionally slow and helps spin more as a game wears on. Batters can profit early if they are patient, but quick scoring is hard because of the sluggish pace and uneven bounce. Seamers get little movement and lean on cutters and variations. Totals of 240–270 are usually competitive in ODIs here, and the middle overs tend to decide the contest.
Expect a hot, humid late morning in Dhaka, with temperatures of roughly 31–33°C and humidity above 75%. Skies should be partly cloudy and a light breeze may help a little. Rain looks unlikely at the start, though cloud and scattered showers or thunderstorms later in the day cannot be ruled out.
Our preview leans towards Bangladesh, who have already won the series and have been the more consistent side with both bat and ball.
Mosaddek Hossain has scored 101 runs without being dismissed, including an unbeaten 86 in the opener, and has also taken two wickets. Najmul Hossain Shanto leads the run charts with 109.
It is a slow surface that turns more as the match goes on, so spin and cutters matter, and wickets in hand late in the innings are valuable.
