India head coach Gautam Gambhir has said his relationship with Rohit Sharma was never only about coach and captain. He was speaking before India’s three-match ODI series against the West Indies.
The two played together before they worked together in their present roles. Gambhir was a senior player when Rohit came into the team, and he says their relationship goes back to that time. In his view, having shared a dressing room makes things easier: each knows how the other thinks.
Disagreements and priorities
Gambhir said disagreements are natural in cricket, but the interests of the team come first when a final decision is made.
During his tenure he has worked with several India captains: Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, across different formats. He said that with all four the common thread was a focus on Indian cricket.
Rohit and Kohli return
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set to come back into India’s ODI squad for the West Indies series after a two-month break, which adds interest to the build-up to the three-match contest.
