Sunil Gavaskar has admitted he was frustrated to see Rohit Sharma dismissed for 92 in the third ODI against West Indies, eight runs short of another century.
The innings
Rohit made 92 from 85 balls before Paul had him out in the 25th over. India went on to total 351/7, but West Indies chased it down for a five-wicket win.
Gavaskar’s reasons
Speaking on JioStar’s Haier Cricket Live, Gavaskar said Rohit could retire from international cricket after the 2027 ODI World Cup. He would like to see him finish with more ODI hundreds than his age.
The former India opener linked this to his own career. He had wanted his Test centuries to match his age when he retired at 38.
A changed approach
Gavaskar also noticed a shift in how Rohit bats. At the 2023 ODI World Cup, Rohit attacked from the very first ball. Now, Gavaskar feels, he values his wicket more and is more intent on turning starts into big scores.
He described Rohit as a natural hundred-maker and said his ability to reach three figures quickly is a major asset in 50-over cricket.
Back-to-back near misses
Rohit had scored 101 in the second ODI on September 30, so the 92 in the third match came close to giving him consecutive centuries.
