Former Sri Lanka left-arm seamer Chaminda Vaas is expected to become the fast-bowling coach of Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2027, as the franchise reshapes its backroom team. The appointment has not yet been officially confirmed.
A wider coaching overhaul
Vaas’s arrival would form part of a broader reshuffle at the Capitals. Sourav Ganguly is reported to be taking over as head coach, with Yuvraj Singh set to serve as his assistant. Former India spinner Amit Mishra is expected to look after the spin department.
The changes follow a disappointing IPL 2026 for the franchise. Delhi finished sixth, winning seven of their 14 matches and losing the other seven, and missed the playoffs for a second year running. The new staff is intended to lift the team’s results in the next edition.
What Vaas brings
Vaas has a strong playing pedigree. He appeared in 111 Tests and 322 ODIs for Sri Lanka, finishing with 355 Test wickets and 400 in one-day internationals. He was also a member of the Sri Lankan squad that won the 1996 World Cup.
Since leaving international cricket he has held a number of bowling-coach positions, working with both Sri Lanka and franchise sides. That background in developing quick bowlers is likely to be useful as Delhi look to sharpen their pace attack.
There are already signs he is involved with the team. Vaas has reportedly been present at the Capitals’ camp and trials in New Delhi, suggesting preparations for the new season are under way even though the formal announcement is still awaited.
