Player SpotlightHarry Brook Becomes First Captain With Two T20I Hundreds in a Year
England captain Harry Brook hit an unbeaten 114 off 49 against Sri Lanka at Southampton to set a new calendar-year T20I record for captains.
England begin the Sri Lanka tour with the first T20I at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on Tuesday 15 September. They arrive in confident form: they swept Sri Lanka 3-0 at home earlier this year, reached the semi-finals of the 2026 T20 World Cup where India beat them, and then won a five-match T20I series against India 4-0.
Harry Brook leads a powerful batting group. He made 229 runs in the India series at a strike rate of 214.02 and an average of 114.50, while Ben Duckett scored 184 in three matches and Jos Buttler is also in the line-up. Tom Banton, Jordan Cox and Aneurin Donald add more hitting. Donald scored 489 runs in 12 matches in the 2026 T20 Blast at a strike rate of 230.66. Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue took seven wickets each against India, and Adil Rashid took six.
Sri Lanka come in after a mixed run, having lost 3-0 to England and 2-1 to the West Indies. Pathum Nissanka and captain Charith Asalanka are central to their batting, and Kusal Mendis is unavailable. Maheesh Theekshana took 11 wickets at the 2026 T20 World Cup and Dushmantha Chameera 10, while Eshan Malinga took 20 wickets at IPL 2026.
A first-innings total around 180 would be highly competitive, and some evening dew could make the ball harder for bowlers to grip.
The Rose Bowl normally gives a balanced white-ball surface, with decent bounce and carry for batters once they are set. Fast bowlers can find swing and seam with the new ball, especially under cloud. The pitch can slow as the innings goes on, which helps spinners and bowlers using cutters or slower balls. A total of 170–180 is competitive in T20 and 190 or more would give the batting side a big advantage.
Southampton should be mild at about 18°C in the evening, mostly sunny to partly cloudy. A few showers are possible in the morning, but the chance of significant rain by the 6:30 pm local start is low, so interruption is unlikely.
Our preview picks England, who are also tipped to win the toss.
