The Rose Bowl, Southampton: History, Pitch and Major Finals

Learn about The Rose Bowl near Southampton, Hampshire’s purpose-built home: how it opened in 2001, its Test debut, the 2021 WTC final and how it plays.

The Rose Bowl, on the outskirts of Southampton, is the home of Hampshire County Cricket Club. It is the newest of England’s Test venues, having been purpose-built to give the club a modern base. The ground is sometimes referred to by its sponsor name, the Utilita Bowl.

Origins

Hampshire left their long-standing home at the County Ground in Southampton and moved to the new stadium in 2001. The ground is set in parkland, with a hotel beside it, and the layout was designed to allow for expansion. Its early years were focused on county cricket, but the club had ambitions to stage international matches.

International cricket

The ground staged its first Test match in 2011, when England played Sri Lanka. It has since held further Tests and a large number of one-day and T20 internationals, and it was a venue for matches in the 2019 men’s World Cup.

Its most significant occasion was the inaugural World Test Championship final in June 2021, in which New Zealand beat India. The hotel overlooking the ground allowed teams and officials to stay on site, which suited the bio-secure conditions in use at that time.

Pitch and conditions

The Rose Bowl’s pitches have often favoured bowlers who can swing and seam the ball, especially early on, while the south-coast climate sometimes brings overcast skies and wind. Spin can play a bigger role as a match wears on. In limited-overs cricket, the ground’s moderate boundaries mean that good scores can be made, particularly under lights.

The ground today

Hampshire play their home County Championship and white-ball fixtures at the stadium, and the Southern Brave play their matches in The Hundred there. With the stadium on the edge of the city, it is reached mainly by road, and it has a large car park.

Although it has less history than grounds such as The Oval or Trent Bridge, the Rose Bowl has become an established part of the English international calendar.
