Chaminda Vaas: Sri Lanka’s Left-Arm Swing Specialist

Profile of Chaminda Vaas, the Sri Lankan left-arm seamer who took 355 Test wickets and 400 ODI wickets, and bowled 8 for 19 against Zimbabwe in 2001.

Early life and rise

Chaminda Vaas was born in 1974 in Mattumagala, near Colombo. He made his international debut in 1994 and was a regular in the Sri Lankan attack for around 15 years, across Tests and one-day internationals.

Playing style

Vaas was a left-arm fast-medium bowler who relied on accuracy, swing and subtle changes of pace rather than express speed. He moved the ball in the air and off the seam, and he was effective with the new ball in particular. He was also a useful lower-order batter, scoring runs in the Test side when needed.

Career highlights

In Tests, Vaas played 111 matches and took 355 wickets. In one-day internationals he played 322 matches and took 400 wickets, as of the end of 2024. He was long considered the leading seam bowler in Sri Lankan history, working alongside the spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, whose wickets were typically at the other end of the same spell.

One of his most notable performances was against Zimbabwe in Colombo in December 2001, where he took 8 for 19, the best bowling figures in a one-day international at the time. In that match, he also took a hat-trick with his first three balls, a rare feat. He also played in the 1996 World Cup-winning team and in the 2007 and 2003 tournaments.

Legacy

Vaas is regarded as one of the most reliable bowlers Sri Lanka has produced and the finest seamer in the country’s international history. After retiring in 2009, he worked as a coach, including at national level and with other teams, which has kept his bowling expertise within the game.
