Chris Gayle Profile: The Universe Boss of T20 Batting

Profile of Chris Gayle, the Jamaican left-handed opener with two Test triple-centuries, a World Cup double hundred and an unbeaten 175 in the IPL.

Chris Gayle is one of the most destructive batters in cricket history. A tall left-handed opener from Jamaica, he combined enormous power with a relaxed style, and he became one of the best-known faces of T20 cricket around the world.

Early life and rise

Born in Kingston in 1979, Gayle made his international debut in 1999. He grew up in a modest background in Jamaica and worked his way through the domestic system, eventually becoming one of the key figures in West Indies cricket for more than two decades.

Playing style

Gayle’s batting was built on a strong base and a long reach. He was happy to see off the new ball and then take the attack to bowlers, especially over the leg side, hitting a very large number of sixes. He also bowled useful part-time off-spin.

Career highlights

In Tests, he scored two triple-centuries: 317 against South Africa in Antigua in 2005 and 333 against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2010. He made 15 Test centuries and more than 7,200 Test runs in 103 matches. In one-day internationals, he scored over 10,000 runs, and his 215 against Zimbabwe in Canberra in the 2015 World Cup was the first double century in the tournament’s history.

In T20 cricket, he scored the first century in a T20 World Cup in 2007, and in 2013, he made an unbeaten 175 off 66 balls for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, a record individual T20 score. He was part of the West Indies teams that won the T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016.

Franchise cricket

Gayle played in T20 leagues around the world and scored more than 14,000 runs in the format. In the IPL, he represented Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab.

Legacy

Gayle’s influence on T20 batting is considerable, and he is often cited as one of the format’s most entertaining players. Career totals are quoted as at the end of 2024 and may be incomplete for franchise cricket.
