Pakistan have a fresh worry before the third Test against England after Babar Azam developed a fever. Team manager Naveed Akram Cheema confirmed it on Wednesday, September 2, saying there was no immediate cause for alarm and that the medical staff expect a quick recovery. Even so, Babar’s availability is not yet confirmed.
A touring party in upheaval
The news arrives during a turbulent spell. Pakistan lost the second Test at Lord’s by 194 runs, and the Pakistan Cricket Board then overhauled the touring setup, sending seven players home from England.
Sarfaraz Ahmed was removed as Test head coach and bowling coach Umar Gul was also let go. Mike Hesson has taken charge of the all-format coaching group, while Misbah-ul-Haq has reportedly offered to resign as national selector.
A tough series for Babar
Babar missed the first Test through injury, with Salman Ali Agha captaining the side. He returned at Lord’s but made only 8 and 6. His last Test century was 161 against New Zealand in December 2022, though he had made 193 runs, with two fifties, in two Tests in the West Indies before the England tour.
Limited options if he is ruled out
Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha were among those recalled after Lord’s, so neither can step in for Babar or take over as captain on tour. Should Babar miss the Edgbaston match, Pakistan would have to make an eighth change to their touring group during the series.
For now, management is hopeful he will be fit. No replacement has been named and the PCB has not confirmed any alteration to the squad or captaincy.
