Misbah-ul-Haq: Pakistan’s Calm Captain and Veteran Middle-Order Batter

Profile of Misbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan batter who led the Test side through a difficult era and took the team to the top of the rankings in 2016.

Misbah-ul-Haq is remembered as one of the steadiest figures in Pakistan’s cricket history. A right-handed middle-order batter, he made his Test debut in 2001, spent several years in and out of the side, and then returned in his thirties to become the backbone of the national team and, later, its most successful Test captain in a turbulent period.

Early life and rise

Born in Mianwali in 1974, Misbah came to cricket relatively late compared with many of his contemporaries and completed his education alongside his early career. He made his Test debut in 2001 against New Zealand in Auckland, but a place in the side proved hard to hold. After a long gap he re-emerged in 2007, when his composed batting caught attention at the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa.

The 2007 World Twenty20 final

Misbah played a central role in Pakistan’s run to the final of that tournament, where the team faced India in Johannesburg. Chasing a stiff target, he took Pakistan close to the finish before being dismissed in the final over attempting a scoop shot, with India winning by five runs. The innings is still among the most discussed of his career.

Captaincy and playing style

Misbah was handed the Test captaincy in 2010 at a time when Pakistan’s cricket was under heavy strain. Playing home matches in the United Arab Emirates, he built a reputation for calm decision-making and a conservative, patient approach to batting that suited a side short of experience. His leadership helped Pakistan win a number of notable Test series, and in 2016 the team reached the top of the Test rankings.

His batting was built around sound defence, careful shot selection and the ability to rebuild an innings after early wickets. Yet he could also accelerate. Against Australia in Abu Dhabi in 2014 he reached a Test fifty in only 21 balls, then a hundred in 56 balls, equalling the fastest Test century at the time.

Career summary and legacy

Misbah retired from Test cricket in 2017 after a series in the West Indies, having played 75 Tests and scored more than 5,000 runs in the format (as of the end of 2024). He also played in the Pakistan Super League for Islamabad United, a team he captained, and later held senior coaching and selection responsibilities with the national side.

His legacy rests on temperament as much as numbers: a leader who steadied a team through difficult years and showed that a late start need not limit a career.
