A profile of Mithali Raj, India’s record-setting women’s batter: her debut century, 214 at Taunton, World Cup finals, ODI run record and enduring legacy.
Mithali Raj is a retired Indian right-handed batter and one of the most accomplished players in the history of women’s cricket. Her international career lasted more than two decades, and her run-scoring in one-day internationals set a record that stood at the end of her career.
Born in Jodhpur in 1982, Mithali grew up in Hyderabad, where she trained as a young cricketer. She made her one-day international debut in June 1999 against Ireland at Milton Keynes, scoring an unbeaten 114 in her first match. In 2002, in just her third Test, she scored 214 against England at Taunton, then the highest individual Test score by a woman.
Mithali was a classical, technically sound batter who valued timing and placement over power. She was especially strong through the off side and was known for her calm temperament, anchoring innings and guiding chases. Her consistency made her a mainstay at number three.
She led India to the final of the 2005 and 2017 Women’s World Cups. She retired from T20 internationals in 2019 and from all international cricket on 8 June 2022.
In one-day internationals she scored 7,805 runs in 232 matches at an average of about 50, the highest aggregate in women’s ODIs. She also played 12 Tests, scoring 699 runs. She received the Arjuna Award in 2003, the Padma Shri in 2015 and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2021.
Mithali’s longevity and consistency raised the profile of women’s cricket in India and inspired many young players, particularly girls, to take up the sport. She is widely considered one of the greatest batters the women’s game has seen. Statistics are as of the end of 2024.
