R Ashwin has said it was the right moment for Chennai Super Kings to look beyond Stephen Fleming, whose 18-year association with the franchise has ended. He also suggested that MS Dhoni could be the natural replacement if he is open to coaching.
A long and successful partnership
Under the former New Zealand captain, CSK won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies, becoming one of the most successful sides in T20 cricket. Speaking on Cricinfo, Ashwin said Fleming understood Dhoni’s thinking and Dhoni saw Fleming as a superb lieutenant, a bond that lasted a very long time.
Ashwin said that if Dhoni wants the job, CSK could not do better. If he does not, the club must find someone able to work independently and own their decisions.
A tough job for the successor
Ashwin warned that the next coach would have to cope with Fleming’s huge legacy as well as the respect Dhoni commands in the dressing room. He noted that Dhoni still features in conversations about squad selection, and that a mentor-like presence will sit close to a group that has grown used to him.
Taking over smoothly, he said, would be very hard unless the newcomer grasps the influence Fleming had on the franchise.
Dhoni’s future and CSK’s slide
Dhoni is still in the CSK squad but missed the 2026 season with a calf injury. The former India wicketkeeper turned 45 earlier this month, so his playing future is open to question and coaching may be an option.
The club’s results have added to the case for change. After the fifth IPL title in 2023, CSK missed the playoffs in each of the next three seasons. They ended 2025 bottom of the table and finished eighth in 2026.
