A Zimbabwean club side, Scorpions, have recorded one of the most remarkable results in the history of limited-overs cricket, posting 822 and then winning by 794 runs against Methane Lions.
Scorpions captain Praise Makaza won the toss and chose to bat, and the opposition bowlers had little answer from the first over.
Two huge individual innings
Opener Winged Mutende struck 203 from 75 balls, with 23 fours and 13 sixes, at a strike rate of 270.67. His partner Takunda Madembo went even bigger, making 302 from 143 deliveries. That innings contained 50 boundaries and seven sixes, and ended when he retired out after 272 minutes at the crease.
The middle order kept up the pace. Gabriel Jaya finished unbeaten on 110 from 49 balls and Vincent Moyo added 78 from 39. Scorpions completed their innings at a scoring rate of 16.44 an over.
Lions fall apart
Methane Lions never looked like chasing the target and were bowled out for 28 for 7, giving Scorpions a victory by 794 runs.
How it compares
The total towers over many famous one-day scores. Bihar’s 574 for 6 against Arunachal Pradesh remains the highest recognised List A total, and well-known innings such as Tamil Nadu’s 506 for 2 and England’s 498 for 4 against the Netherlands look modest by comparison. The match has prompted widespread discussion among cricket followers, many of whom have called it one of the most unbelievable batting displays ever seen in domestic cricket.
