West Indies have announced their squads for the tour of India, resting Shimron Hetmyer from the ODI series and handing Kamil Pooran a first international call-up. Shai Hope will captain the side in both formats.
The ODIs start on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram and end on October 3. Hetmyer is expected to join the T20I group when the five-match T20I series begins on October 6.
Squad changes
Pooran earns his place in the T20I squad after a strong Caribbean Premier League with Saint Lucia Kings, where he scored 273 runs in eight matches at a strike rate of 159.34. Quentin Sampson and Keemo Paul are recalled for the T20Is, while Jason Holder is rested from that format. Nineteen-year-old Jewel Andrew returns and is included in both squads.
The ODI group is broadly the same as the one that lost 3-2 to New Zealand in July. John Campbell is back after missing the last two games of that series through injury. Ackeem Auguste is still recovering from surgery last month, and Brandon King is not in the ODI squad.
World Cup context
The second ODI, on September 30, closes the qualification cycle for automatic entry to the 2027 World Cup in Africa. West Indies have already missed out and will go through the 2027 World Cup Qualifiers.
Head coach Darren Sammy said facing the top team in the world is a chance to refine West Indies’ ODI performances and to assess players in important roles, with the 2027 World Cup as the long-term target.
