Watson Praises Varun Chakravarthy for Bowling Through Pain as KKR Chase Playoffs

Shane Watson has praised Varun Chakravarthy’s commitment after the spinner continued to perform for Kolkata Knight Riders while apparently carrying an injury.

A key figure in the turnaround

Chakravarthy has been central to KKR’s revival in the second half of the tournament, and his performances have helped the defending champions stay in the race for a playoff place.

Reports of a foot fracture

Reports suggest he has been dealing with a hairline fracture in his left foot. He was seen limping several times during KKR’s rain-affected four-wicket win, which ran into Thursday because of interruptions. Ahead of the game he reportedly trained on his own behind the black sightscreen, away from the public and media.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Watson said he was not sure how far along Chakravarthy was in his rehab, but that he knew the spinner was playing through pain, which showed his bravery and his wish to contribute. He added that Chakravarthy was still bowling beautifully.

Green’s bowling and the comeback

In another fitness matter earlier in the season, KKR’s captain questioned why Cameron Green was not bowling against Mumbai Indians. Cricket Australia later explained that KKR had been told he would not bowl during the first 10 to 12 days of the tournament while recovering from a back injury.

After a poor start to IPL 2026, KKR have won five of their last six matches. The three-time champions are now firmly in contention for the fourth playoff spot.
