Washington Sundar remained not out on 52 as India reached England’s target of 259 with six wickets in hand, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
The chase
Sundar came in at No. 5 after captain Shubman Gill retired hurt on 80, with 110 still needed. He shared an unbeaten 102-run stand with Axar Patel, who was named Player of the Match, to finish the job.
Adapting to roles
The 26-year-old has batted in many positions, often as a T20I finisher and as high as No. 4 in Tests. Against England he again adjusted to the circumstances and played a composed innings under pressure. He said he relishes batting in varied situations and contributing to team wins.
Credit to his mentors
Sundar spoke about the influence of Gautam Gambhir, who became India’s head coach in July 2024. The Tamil Nadu all-rounder said Gambhir helped him understand his strengths and gain clarity about his game.
He also thanked Ashish Nehra for his role in his development at Gujarat Titans, saying the former India seamer has helped him grow as both a cricketer and a person.
Next up
India can clinch the series in the second ODI at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, on 16 July.
