Stokes Expected to Captain England in Third Test as Nightclub Row Calms

Ben Stokes is expected to return as England captain for the third Test against New Zealand as the controversy over a nightclub episode appears to be cooling.

What happened

Stokes and Gus Atkinson were involved in a late-night altercation at a nightclub after England’s first Test win over New Zealand at Lord’s. The incident reportedly broke a team curfew introduced after earlier disciplinary concerns during the Ashes, a policy Stokes himself helped set up.

The Telegraph reported that the ECB questioned both players this week and that the findings of the internal investigation should be released before the second Test finishes. No final decision has been confirmed, but reports suggest the board’s initial frustration has softened in recent days.

Where things stand

Stokes is also due to play for Durham against Northamptonshire in the County Championship at Chester-le-Street, a sign he is regaining match rhythm. In his absence Joe Root is captaining England in the second Test. Vice-captain Harry Brook was previously linked with an off-field incident on an ODI tour in Wellington, which emerged only months later.

Managing director Rob Key and head coach Brendon McCullum have not hinted at taking the captaincy from Stokes, and if he is cleared he is widely expected to resume leading the side as soon as he rejoins the squad.

England’s selection has also been disrupted by the unavailability of Ollie Robinson and Jamie Smith, which brought Test debuts for Jordan Cox, James Rew and Sonny Baker in the ongoing match at The Oval.
