Rohit Sharma answered talk about his international future with a century at Lord’s, though it could not prevent a 2-1 series defeat for India against England.
The innings and the match
His hundred contained 17 fours and five sixes. He settled in first and then attacked the England bowlers hard. England had posted 387 for 3, built on a fine 141 from Ben Duckett and half-centuries from Jacob Bethell and Joe Root.
India started the chase strongly, with Rohit and captain Shubman Gill adding 147 for the first wicket. Gill made 77 and Virat Kohli 74, but a late collapse left India 27 runs short.
Rohit’s reaction
Speaking to the BCCI, Rohit said he was disappointed because India had been playing good cricket, having started well in Birmingham. He felt the batting fell short at Cardiff and again at Lord’s, where they finished 20 to 25 runs behind.
The 38-year-old asked for patience with the bowlers, who have limited ODI experience, and hoped the team would learn from the game.
He also said he loves playing in England: the atmosphere, grounds and pitches test a player in different ways, and a cricketer wants to be challenged all the time. He said he enjoyed his time in the middle.
Records in England
The Mumbai batter is now the highest-scoring overseas batter in ODIs in England, with 1,603 runs in 30 innings at an average of 64.12. His eight hundreds there equal the record held by Marcus Trescothick.
