Rohit Sharma Keeps 2027 World Cup Plans Open: ‘We Will See’

Rohit Sharma Keeps 2027 World Cup Plans Open: ‘We Will See’

Rohit Sharma has declined to commit either way on playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup. The 38-year-old was asked about it at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai on Thursday and kept his answer short, saying the tournament is a long way off and he will decide closer to the time.

Open-top bus parade unlikely

The 2027 tournament will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Rohit has retired from T20I and Test cricket but remains available for India in ODIs, which keeps speculation about his future alive.

He was also asked whether Mumbai could see an open-bus parade if India win the 2027 title, as it did after the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph. Rohit replied that he did not think a parade would be possible now.

Saikia questions the doubts

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, speaking to reporters after the board’s review meeting, defended the batter and asked why his ODI future was still being debated. He pointed to Rohit’s form, noting the 138 he scored in the final match of the recent ODI series against England.

Rohit played a significant part in that series, and the century strengthened the case for him continuing in the 50-over format.

No rush to decide

With the World Cup more than a year away, Rohit’s remarks suggest no announcement is coming soon. For now he appears set on taking things one step at a time while leaving the door open to another World Cup campaign.
