Reports: Rohit Sharma Accepts ODI Exit, but BCCI Has Not Confirmed It

Rohit Sharma has reportedly agreed to end his ODI career, although he was said to be unhappy with the selectors’ stance. As of September 3, 2026, the BCCI had not confirmed any retirement.

What the reports say

According to the reports, a selection committee member, rather than chief selector Ajit Agarkar, told Rohit during the July 2026 England tour that the panel planned to look beyond him in ODIs. He was reportedly asked about retiring after the third ODI at Lord’s on July 19.

The timing is striking. In that match Rohit made 138 from 110 balls, but India fell 27 runs short chasing England’s 388.

No official explanation

The BCCI and selectors have not given a definitive public reason. The reports only indicate that a selector conveyed the panel’s plans and raised the prospect of retirement after Lord’s. Shubman Gill’s appointment as ODI captain had already suggested the management wants to build a new core before the 2027 ODI World Cup.

There has also been mixed messaging. During the England tour, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia publicly dismissed talk that Lord’s would be Rohit’s last ODI, saying he remained in the squad.

What comes next

Rohit could still feature in discussion for India’s three-match ODI series against the West Indies, starting on September 27. A BCCI review meeting in Mumbai on September 3, involving Gautam Gambhir, Agarkar, VVS Laxman and the captains, may bring clarity.

The ODI futures of Rohit, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja are reportedly among the topics as India begin shaping a squad for the next World Cup cycle. Until an announcement is made, Rohit’s status in the format remains uncertain.
