Ashwin Urges India to Settle the Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli 2027 World Cup Question

R Ashwin believes the repeated talk about whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will play at the 2027 ODI World Cup is unhelpful, and wants India’s management to settle the matter without delay. He argues the debate comes from a mindset that doubts their place rather than from their performances.

Experience in South Africa

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former India spinner said he does not know where the speculation starts, but that someone clearly feels the pair should not go. Others want them in the squad. His own view is that India need experienced batters at a World Cup in South Africa.

If the team wants them, Ashwin said, a decision should be made now and the players should be made comfortable and confident for the next year. Otherwise the same debate will return after every one or two failures.

He noted that there is still time, with the tournament around 14 to 15 months away, but clarity is vital. Fitness matters at this age, he added, and should be managed carefully.

Where the pair stand

Rohit played in the home ODI series against Afghanistan, scoring 143 runs in three innings, including 48 and 79, following a run-out in the opener. Kohli missed that series with a hamstring injury but is named in the squad for the England ODIs, subject to fitness clearance.

That three-match series starts in Birmingham on July 14, followed by Cardiff on July 16 and London on July 19.
