Riyan Parag has confirmed that he has undergone surgery on his troublesome shoulder and that the procedure went as planned. The Assam batter shared the update on Instagram, signing off with a promise to return soon.
A two-year battle with pain
Parag has lived with a recurring shoulder problem since making his international debut in 2024, and he often kept playing through the discomfort. The injury has now forced him out of national duties and into corrective surgery.
In his post he described the last two years as testing in ways he had not anticipated, with some good days, some frustrating ones, and others where simply finishing a match was difficult. He joked that the shoulder had finally won, thanked those who had been asking after him, and said the focus now shifts to recovery, rehab and patience.
Captaincy and India A setback
Parag was named Rajasthan Royals captain ahead of IPL 2026 and had a strong first campaign as leader. He guided the franchise to the playoffs, where they ended third after a narrow loss to Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2.
He had also been picked in the India A squad and was due to serve as vice-captain on the tour of Sri Lanka, but the shoulder problem ruled him out. Ruturaj Gaikwad took his place and has since been putting together consistent performances.
What comes next
Parag will now begin rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where he will be assessed before he is cleared to return to competitive cricket. Supporters and selectors alike are expected to follow his recovery timeline closely, as well as the date of his eventual comeback.
