Nikhil Chaudhary Opens Up on Feeling More Australian Than Indian After T20I Debut

Nikhil Chaudhary, born in Delhi, says he now feels more at home as an Australian than as an Indian, after a path to international cricket that began with a holiday and was reshaped by the Covid-19 pandemic.

From Punjab to Brisbane

Chaudhary developed his game in India, playing domestic cricket for Punjab and sharing dressing rooms with Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh. He travelled to Australia for a short break with return tickets already booked, but the global lockdowns left him stuck there for months.

During that time he began playing club cricket for Norths in Brisbane, which he described to ESPNcricinfo as the point where things changed. His club form brought him into contact with former player James Hopes, who helped link him to Big Bash League opportunities, and that led to a Hobart Hurricanes contract in 2023.

Feeling included

Chaudhary said the BBL and the domestic scene made him feel welcome and valued even though he began as an outsider. He added that he likes how straightforward and genuine people are in Australia, which makes communication and daily life easier, and that this is why he feels connected to the culture.

A rare milestone

He has now won a first call-up and made his debut for Australia’s T20I side, becoming the 117th player to represent the country in the format. He is also the first male cricketer in more than six decades to debut for Australia after beginning his career overseas.

His story, running from Delhi to the Australian national team, reflects how opportunity and resilience, along with an unexpected twist during the pandemic, can shape a career.
