The Bangladesh Cricket Board has confirmed that Nigar Sultana will continue as Bangladesh Women’s ODI captain for the three-match series in Australia.
The announcement ends speculation about a leadership change that arose after Nigar stepped down as T20I captain during the Asian Games.
The meeting at BCB headquarters
BCB president Tamim Iqbal and women’s wing chairman Rafiqul Islam Babu met members of the women’s team at the board’s headquarters on Monday, September 28, to discuss the captaincy and other team matters. Afterwards Rafiqul told Cricbuzz that he had informed the players in the meeting that Nigar stays on as captain and will lead the side in Australia.
Recent results and the coach’s comments
The decision follows mixed results. Bangladesh were unbeaten in the World Cup qualifiers earlier in 2026, but then lost a home series 2-1 to Sri Lanka and had mixed results in a tri-series with Scotland and the Netherlands. At the Women’s World Cup they won two of five matches.
Rafiqul also addressed recent remarks by the team’s coach, calling them indiscreet and saying they went beyond the code of conduct. He said no show-cause notice has been issued yet, but that the board did not expect such comments from a coach of his seniority.
Nigar’s ODI record
Nigar has played 68 ODIs, scoring 1,585 runs at an average of 27.81 and a strike rate of 56.57. That includes nine fifties and one century, with a best of 101.
With the captaincy settled, Bangladesh can now focus on the ODI series in Australia.
