McCullum Insists His Commitment to England Is Intact After Test Series Defeat

Brendon McCullum has made clear he wants to stay on as England coach. The defeat at Trent Bridge extended a poor spell: England have now lost seven of their last nine Tests under him, including a 4-1 Ashes loss in Australia and their first home Test series defeat since 2012.

Standing by the Project

Speaking to Sky Sports, McCullum said his enthusiasm and commitment have never wavered and that he still believes in where the team can go. He said England retain an identity and want to build on it while representing the country with pride.

The former New Zealand captain also pointed to the depth of talent in English cricket, and said the side must keep giving chances to emerging players while still chasing results. McCullum was first appointed Test coach, and his remit grew to cover all formats after a contract extension in 2024.

Looking Ahead to India

His focus now moves to the five-match T20I series against India, which starts on July 1 at Chester-le-Street. McCullum said workload management will matter, adding that the schedule is what it is and England must work around it. The squad has good depth, he said, and workloads from this Test will be assessed before decisions are made.

White-ball captain Harry Brook and all-rounder Jacob Bethell were seen training with the white ball on the final morning at Trent Bridge.

The Stokes Factor

Test captain Ben Stokes announced his international retirement on the fourth day, though he plans to keep playing domestic and franchise cricket. He and McCullum have driven England’s aggressive Test approach, and McCullum must now rebuild in a transitional period.
