ECB Dismisses Brendon McCullum as England Test Coach, Ending the Bazball Era

Brendon McCullum has been removed as England’s Test head coach after almost four years in charge, bringing the Bazball era to an end. He will remain with England to concentrate on the white-ball teams.

His impact

Working closely with captain Ben Stokes, McCullum drove an aggressive, fearless approach to red-ball cricket that delivered several memorable wins and revived interest in the Test side. The philosophy won wide praise but also drew criticism over how well it worked in tough overseas conditions.

Reactions

McCullum said he had loved coaching the Test side and was very proud of what had been achieved, with great highs and some hard days. Though gutted not to continue, the former New Zealand captain said he respected the decision and would give everything to the white-ball teams. He wished the Test players well and said he was confident about their future.

ECB Managing Director Rob Key described McCullum’s tenure as one of the most influential in modern English cricket. He said many of the side’s best recent moments came under his leadership, and that he changed the team’s mentality and helped develop young players who will be central to the future.

ECB Chief Executive Richard Gould thanked McCullum for reviving the Test team, saying the board believes a change is needed as it prepares for next summer’s Ashes series.

What next

The ECB will now search for a new Test head coach ahead of a crucial period for English cricket.
