Litton Das urges freedom as Bangladesh ease back into T20 cricket

On the eve of the series, Bangladesh captain Litton Das summed up his approach in three words: let them play. The message reflects the mood in the dressing room as the team return to T20 cricket.

Continuity over a rebuild

Rather than starting again from scratch, Litton wants to build on the team spirit created during the previous T20 World Cup campaign. He said the bonding was strong and the preparation very good, and that he intends to hold the group together and move forward from there.

Form and batting concerns

Bangladesh come in encouraged by a 2-1 ODI series win over New Zealand, but their T20I record is uneven. Series wins over Afghanistan and Ireland last year showed progress, yet a 3-0 loss to the West Indies highlighted continuing batting problems.

The bowlers have generally done well. In the batting, opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim has impressed while Saif Hassan has been inconsistent at the top. Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain and Parvez Hossain Emon are still looking for settled roles, with Hridoy’s strike rate and Shamim’s lack of impact as a finisher among the worries. Mohammad Saifuddin adds depth lower down, and Rishad Hossain has shown glimpses of hitting power.

Keeping it simple

Litton accepted the imbalance but stressed clear roles. He said that if the batters do their jobs, there is no need to lean on the lower order, and that more depth would let the top order play freely. Because the format has been absent for a long time, he does not want to add pressure on anyone.

The series may also offer chances to new faces such as Abdul Gaffar Saqlain and Ripon Mondol, as Litton experiments ahead of a busy schedule against leading opponents.
