Kapil Dev Believes Virat Kohli May Come to Wish He Had Played More Tests

Kapil Dev has suggested that Virat Kohli could one day look back and wish he had played more Test cricket, while accepting that only Kohli knows what is right for his own career.

Where Kohli stands

Kohli stepped away from T20I cricket after India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, and announced his Test retirement in May 2025. Since then he has remained part of India’s international plans as an ODI player.

Dev on fitness and ability

Dev feels Kohli’s fitness levels mean he can keep performing at the top for several more years. He also believes the former India captain still had more to give in Tests. Talking about the decision to leave the longest format, Dev said he would have liked to watch Kohli play more red-ball cricket, though he respected that the choice was Kohli’s to make.

Recent ODI form

Kohli showed his class in the opening ODI against West Indies, finishing unbeaten on 139 from 88 balls, a knock that included nine sixes.

With Test and T20I cricket behind him, the 50-over game is now where Kohli’s international form will be judged, and his performances in that format are likely to attract close attention.
