Player SpotlightKapil Dev Believes Virat Kohli May Come to Wish He Had Played More Tests
Kapil Dev says Virat Kohli’s fitness could keep him going for years and that he would have liked to see the batter play more Test cricket.
A profile of Kapil Dev, the Chandigarh-born all-rounder who captained India to the 1983 World Cup and retired with a then-record 434 Test wickets.
Kapil Dev was born in Chandigarh in 1959 and played for Haryana before breaking into the India side. He made his Test debut against Pakistan in Faisalabad in October 1978, and quickly established himself as a fast-medium bowler with a natural, swinging action who could also hit the ball hard.
At a time when India’s attack was dominated by spin, Kapil gave the team a genuine pace option. His in-swinging delivery was effective with the new ball, and he was a fearless lower-order hitter who could change the course of a match in a few overs. He also played in English county cricket for Northamptonshire.
The defining moment of his career was India’s victory at the 1983 World Cup in England, where he was captain. India had been regarded as outsiders, but they beat the mighty West Indies in the final at Lord’s. Against Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells earlier in the tournament, Kapil rescued India from an early collapse with an unbeaten 175, then the highest score in a one-day international.
Kapil played 131 Tests, scoring 5,248 runs and taking 434 wickets, which was the world record for Test wickets when he retired in 1994. In 225 one-day internationals he scored 3,783 runs and took 253 wickets. His career lasted sixteen years, which is notable for a fast bowler.
The 1983 triumph is widely credited with changing the place of cricket in Indian life, inspiring a generation to take up the sport and helping it become the country’s most popular game. Kapil remains the standard against which Indian all-rounders are measured. The totals above are as of the end of 2024.
