Justin Langer Says He Has Had No England Test Coaching Approach

Justin Langer has denied that he has been offered, or even approached about, the England Test head coach role.

Denying the speculation

Langer had been seen as a leading candidate, alongside former England coach Andy Flower, after Brendon McCullum stepped down from the Test job earlier this month. Flower has since said he is out of contention. On the Stick to Cricket podcast, Langer said he had heard nothing from the ECB and called the reports speculation and rumour.

The former Australia batter did concede that the position is attractive. In his view there are three major coaching jobs in the world, Australia, India and England, though he stressed that it was all hypothetical.

What the next coach will need

Asked who might get the job, Langer declined to name anyone. He said the appointee will have to work well with McCullum, who remains England’s white-ball head coach, and must have a clear vision. Strong leaders, he said, are clear about what they stand for.

Other names in the frame

Stephen Fleming, Richard Dawson, Jonathan Trott and Tom Moody have all been linked with the role. Marcus Trescothick could also take charge on an interim basis for England’s Pakistan series, which starts on August 16.

Langer, meanwhile, is coaching Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred 2026, and the team have made a good start with two wins from their first three matches.
